Large semiconductor plant under construction with cranes on flat Texas farmland, the Taylor area east of the north Austin suburbs

Which North Austin Suburb Is Closest to the Samsung Plant in Taylor?

Hutto is closest, but closest is not always the right answer.
August 28, 2026

I have been getting this call regularly. Somebody takes a job at the Samsung facility in Taylor, they have never been to Central Texas, and they are trying to figure out where to live from a thousand miles away.

Here is the honest version, including the part about not overpaying.

Short answer

Hutto is closest to Samsung's Taylor fab at 1530 FM 973: about 6 miles in a straight line from central Hutto, and Google Maps showed 12 to 24 minutes for a weekday 7:30 a.m. drive from Hutto City Hall. Pflugerville, Round Rock and Georgetown sit 12 to 15 miles away. Cedar Park and Leander are 23 to 24 miles away, and their fastest routes use a toll road.

Sources: fab address from the TDLR project filing; drive estimates from Google Maps typical traffic for Tuesday, October 20, 2026, retrieved October 14, 2026; straight-line miles computed from each city center. Updated October 14, 2026.

The short version

  • Hutto is closest, directly on US 79 between Round Rock and Taylor, with the lowest entry cost and the thinnest amenities.
  • Round Rock hedges your bets, Pflugerville suits a household that also works south, Georgetown is a real drive and Leander is the farthest.
  • Compare monthly payments, not prices: get the full tax rate, any MUD or PID, HOA dues and an insurance quote for each parcel.
  • Large employer announcements are projections. Buy a house that works if nothing appreciates.

Where the plant actually is

Samsung's semiconductor facility sits in Taylor, Texas, in eastern Williamson County. The company has been standing up operations at the site, and Samsung's own published projection for the Taylor fab is more than 2,000 high-tech jobs, from its November 2021 announcement. A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation project filing lists the fab at 1530 FM 973, Taylor, in Williamson County.

Two things worth saying plainly. The timeline on this project has moved more than once, and publicly announced job counts at large industrial projects are projections, not guarantees. Plan around the job offer in your hand, not around the press release.

Taylor itself is a small, older town. It is not a suburb in the sense that Round Rock is a suburb. That is part of why most people taking these jobs end up living somewhere else along the corridor and driving in.

The road network you will actually use

Three roads matter.

US 79 is the main east-west route into Taylor from the west. It starts at I-35 in Round Rock, runs east through Round Rock as Palm Valley Boulevard, into Hutto, past an interchange with SH 130, and on to Taylor. If you live anywhere along the I-35 side, US 79 is your road.

SH 130 is the toll road that runs north and south on the east side of the metro. Its northern terminus is at I-35 in Georgetown, and it runs south as an eastern bypass around Round Rock, past Pflugerville, and well south of Austin. It intersects US 79 between Round Rock and Hutto. SH 130 is the piece that makes the eastern suburbs work for a Taylor commute.

SH 29 runs east-west through Georgetown. Going east from Georgetown it ends at SH 95 north of Taylor, and SH 95 takes you south into town. It is a real route, it is mostly two-lane rural highway, and it is not fast.

I am not going to give you one drive time in minutes. Anyone who does is either quoting a mapping app at 2 in the afternoon or making it up. What I can tell you is the geometry, and geometry is stable. Below is the geometry plus the range a mapping app showed for one weekday morning, dated, so you can see the spread instead of a single number.

Hutto

Hutto is closest, full stop. It sits directly on US 79 between Round Rock and Taylor, and the drive is a straight shot east with no metro traffic in the way. It is also generally the cheapest entry point of the cities on this list: the Census median owner-estimated home value for 2020 to 2024 was $365,700 in Hutto, the lowest of the six (ACS table DP04).

Hutto's housing stock skews new and suburban, much of it delivered in the last fifteen years. It is a smaller town that has grown very fast, which means the amenity base is thinner than Round Rock or Pflugerville and is still catching up to the rooftops. Hutto ISD is the district.

The tradeoff is straightforward: shortest commute, lowest entry cost, fewest amenities, and the most exposure to whatever happens to demand in eastern Williamson County over the next several years. If you like the idea of being close to work and you do not need a lot of retail and restaurant options within a short drive, Hutto is the obvious answer. I wrote up the full picture in what to know before moving to Hutto.

Round Rock

Round Rock is the deepest, most established market on this list. It has decades of housing stock across a wide range of ages and price points, a genuine employment base of its own, a full amenity and retail base, an old downtown, and Round Rock ISD.

The commute is a straight run east on US 79 through Hutto. It is longer than Hutto's and the west side of Round Rock is meaningfully further from Taylor than the east side, so which part of Round Rock you buy in matters as much as the city name.

Round Rock is the right answer for a lot of people because it hedges. If the Samsung job does not work out, or if a spouse works somewhere else in the metro, Round Rock keeps every option open. You pay for that flexibility, and in my view it is often worth paying for.

Pflugerville

Pflugerville is in Travis County, south and west of Hutto. The commute runs north and east, typically via SH 130 to US 79, or on the smaller north-south roads up to Hutto and east from there.

Pflugerville's stock is a mix, with a lot of build-out from the 1990s onward and continuing new sections. It has more amenity density than Hutto and better access south into Austin proper than any of the others on this list. Pflugerville ISD is the main district, though boundaries here are not tidy.

Pflugerville makes the most sense when someone in the household works south or in central Austin and the Samsung commute has to coexist with that.

Georgetown buyer guide

Housing ages, districts and parcel checks in town are covered in the Georgetown, TX home buyer guide.

Georgetown

Georgetown is a real drive to Taylor. You have two options, neither of them quick: SH 29 east to SH 95 south, which is rural two-lane, or south on I-35 or SH 130 and then east on US 79. Both involve a meaningful distance.

What Georgetown gives you in return is a genuine town with a historic square, a wide range of housing ages including actually old houses, Georgetown ISD, and a civic identity that the newer cities do not have yet. It also has Sun City, the large age-restricted community, which matters only if you qualify for it. How those rules work is on the age-restricted communities page.

Buy Georgetown if you want Georgetown. Do not buy Georgetown because you thought it was close to Taylor.

Road curving through cedar-covered limestone hills at dusk, the Hill Country side of the corridor around Leander

Leander

Leander is the furthest of these from Taylor and it is not close. Leander sits on the 183A corridor on the west side of the metro, and Taylor is on the far east side. Any route involves crossing the whole width of the corridor.

Leander is a good town and I live in this part of the corridor. It is not a Samsung commute town. If you are considering it anyway because a spouse works in northwest Austin, do that drive at 6:30 on a weekday morning before you commit to it.

The thing that actually decides it: total monthly cost

Here is where most relocating buyers make their mistake. They compare list prices across cities, pick the cheapest, and get a surprise on the first tax bill.

Texas has no state income tax and relatively high property taxes. The combined rate varies by city, by county, by school district, and by which special districts a specific parcel falls into. Between these cities the combined rate can differ enough to reorder your entire list.

2025 adopted rates per $100 of taxable value, Texas Comptroller. Base adds city, county (Travis for Pflugerville, Williamson for the rest) and the main school district. Austin Community College, emergency services districts, MUDs and PIDs vary by parcel and are not included. Checked October 14, 2026.

Then there are the layers underneath. Newer Central Texas subdivisions frequently sit inside a MUD, a Municipal Utility District, which adds a rate to the bill to repay bonds issued for the neighborhood's infrastructure. Some sit inside a PID, a Public Improvement District, which adds an assessment. Both are legitimate. Neither shows up in the asking price. Both are far more common in the newest sections, which means the newest and most attractively priced inventory is often the inventory carrying the extra layer.

Hutto and the newer parts of Pflugerville and Round Rock have a lot of this. So do the new sections of Georgetown and Leander.

I explained the structures in HOA, MUD and PID in Texas explained, and it is worth reading before you shop rather than after.

The practical instruction: for every address you are serious about, get the full combined tax rate for that exact parcel, any PID assessment, HOA dues, and a real insurance quote. Build the monthly number. Compare monthly numbers, not prices. The Williamson Central Appraisal District and the county's truth in taxation site will show you the taxing entities tied to a specific property, and your title company can confirm district membership in writing.

I have seen the cheaper house cost more per month. Regularly.

MUDs and PIDs

How these districts change a monthly payment is explained in MUD and PID explained for buyers.

Housing stock differences in one paragraph

Round Rock has the widest range of ages and the deepest resale market. Georgetown has genuine historic stock plus large new master-planned sections. Pflugerville is mostly 1990s onward with continuing new sections. Hutto and Leander are the newest overall, with limited older inventory. If you want a house with mature trees and a settled street, that narrows your list fast. If you want new construction with a builder warranty, it widens it.

Wood framing of a new two-story house under construction in Central Texas, new construction in the suburbs near the Samsung Taylor fab

Compare monthly numbers, not prices

Tax rate, any MUD or PID, HOA dues and an insurance quote for the exact address decide the payment. The first-home comparison and new construction comparison put the six towns side by side.

The part nobody wants to hear

A large employer arriving changes a housing market. It moves demand, and demand moves price. That is real and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

What I will not do is tell you that buying near Taylor is a guaranteed appreciation play, because I do not know that and neither does anyone else. Large industrial projects have delays, scope changes and phase adjustments. This one already has. Announced job numbers are projections. Supply responds to demand, and eastern Williamson County has a great deal of developable land, which means builders can add inventory faster here than in a supply-constrained market. That response caps how far prices run.

If you hear a version of "get in now before the Samsung effect prices you out," slow down. That sentence is a sales tool, not an analysis.

Buy a house you want to live in, at a monthly payment that works if nothing appreciates at all, with a commute you have actually driven at the hour you will actually drive it. If appreciation comes, good. Do not underwrite your purchase on it.

If you want the broader lay of the land before you narrow down, I compared all the corridor cities in the north Austin corridor compared.
