Hutto is the least expensive entry point into the north Austin metro and the one with the most obvious upside argument. It sits in Williamson County east of Round Rock along US 79, and for a long time it was a small town that happened to be near a growing metro. That has changed. The semiconductor investment in nearby Taylor put a large, well-paid employment base within a short drive of Hutto, and the housing market here has been reacting to that ever since.
Hutto is further out. If you work on the west side of Austin, this is a long drive and no amount of enthusiasm changes that. What Hutto offers is more square footage, newer construction and a lower price than anywhere else on this list, plus proximity to an employment corridor that is still being built. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on where you work and how long you plan to stay.
US 79 is the main artery, connecting Hutto west to Round Rock and I-35 and east to Taylor. SH 130 runs just west of town and gives a fast route south toward the airport and southeast Austin without touching I-35. For anyone whose work is on the east side of the metro, that combination is genuinely convenient.
Hutto ISD serves the city. It is a smaller district than Round Rock or Leander, which some families specifically want and others specifically do not. Worth visiting in person rather than reading ratings, because the character of a smaller district is the thing that either fits your family or does not, and that does not show up in a number.
Downtown Hutto and the Co-Op District have been the focus of a real redevelopment effort, aimed at giving the city a center rather than just subdivisions. The hippo is the town mascot and you will see it everywhere, which tells you something true about the place: it has an identity and it likes it. For families who want a small-town feel with metro access, that matters.
Overwhelmingly newer. Large master-planned communities dominate, with active builder inventory. That means the same cautions apply here as in Leander, only more so: understand which phases are built out, what the community will look like when it is finished, and what a builder incentive is actually worth against a comparable resale. Do not walk into a builder’s sales office without your own agent.
