West Lake Hills is a small city in Travis County, just west of downtown Austin across the Colorado River. It has its own city government, separate from Austin, and its own rules for building and remodeling.

Bee Cave Road and Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Highway) are the main roads, with MoPac close by on the east side. Downtown Austin is a short drive on a clear day. Time the drive from the house you like at the hour you would leave for work.
The terrain is hilly and wooded. Ask your inspector about drainage, slopes, retaining walls and the foundation, and ask the seller how water and wastewater are provided to the lot. If you are weighing a remodel, check the city’s permit rules first.
